NEW ORLEANS The City Council voted 6-1 to exempt public safety employees from New Orleans' domicile ordinance.
The move allows those working for the police department, fire department or EMS to live outside of Orleans Parish.
District E councilman James Gray cast the only vote against the move.
Prior to the discussion Thursday, NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas said he and Mayor Mitch Landrieu were working to remove any barriers to keep the 'brightest and brave' from being hired.
'If that's the will of the Council, we will embrace that. It will be a barrier that we think is out of the way,' Serpas said. 'We do think it's very clear that our purpose is to hire the bravest and brightest people with the fewest number of barriers in the way.'
