NEW ORLEANS An NOPD officer, who while responding to a shoplifting call shot and killed a 31-year-old man in the 8600 block of Belfast in February, has been cleared from charges.

According to Chris Bowman, a spokesman for the New Orleans District Attorney's Office, prosecutors have determined that the shooting of Keith Atkinson by Officer Jonathan Hirdes was justifiable, and did not warrant further action from their office.

Bowman says the DA's office was asked to consult on the case by NOPD, after the department conducted a previous internal investigation clearing the officer in the shooting. According to Bowman, the case is now closed.

On February 16, around 9:30 a.m., police responded to a shoplifting call on Belfast Street in Hollygrove, when Hirdes fatally shot Atkinson who was reportedly armed with a .45 caliber handgun at the time.
