MANDEVILLE- A long-time traffic headache for western St. Tammany Parish drivers is getting a makeover.

DOTD broke ground today on a widening project for Highway 190 between Asbury and Lonesome roads. The $11.3 million project will bring the roadway up to four lanes, from two, and eliminate the bottleneck at Bayou Chinchuba. Area leaders say this work has been a long time coming.

Mandeville Mayor Donald Villere said, 'When you look at 20,000 cars that go through a two-lane road, it seems as though it's double that during peak rush hour and it's such an important area for Mandeville'

'We grew very fast, now we're trying to catch up,' said Parish President Pat Brister, 'I think we're getting close and this project is going to do so much to help us get that capacity up to where we need.'

The project should be complete next spring.
