Constant wins Gretna mayor's election, becoming city's first female chief executive

Voters in Gretna promoted City Council member Belinda Constant to the mayor's office Saturday night, electing the first female mayor in the city's history and the first new mayor for this West Bank city in close to three decades.
Constant defeated fellow council member Vincent Cox in the election to replace Mayor Ronnie Harris.Unofficial returns showed Constant earning2,240 votes to Cox's 1,641 votes.

Constant, a Democrat, was also the first woman elected to the Gretna council.A former Jefferson Parish Drug Court and 5th Circuit Court of Appeal administrator, she has served on the council since 2005.
Cox, a Republican and native of the city, has served on the council for 25 years.
With both council members running for mayor, elections were also held Saturday for their council seats.Mark Miller and Joseph Marino won those elections.
Mayor Ronnie Harris decided not to seek an eighth term in office, instead taking a position as executive director of the Louisiana Municipal Association.
