NEW ORLEANS A 60-year-old contractor was convicted of fraud for taking more than $70,000 from an elderly couple looking to build a home in the Lower Ninth Ward, the Orleans Parish District Attorney's office announced Thursday.
A jury found Bobby Johnson, owner and operator of American Integrity Homes guilty late Wednesday night.
According to the DA's office, Johnson took in excess of $70,000 from the couple to build a steel-framed home in July 2008 and little to no work was done.
The victims made several attempts to solve the matter but when they learned the money had not been held and had instead been spent, they contacted the DA's office.
'People such as the defendant have committed a violent act against the recovery of this city, and I will use the full power of my office to ensure that they are held fully accountable for his criminal conduct,' said District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro.
Johnson will be sentenced on April 13 and faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
