NEW ORLEANS Deputies have recovered the third man to escape from Orleans Parish prison's tent area Tuesday afternoon.
Michael Washington was captured on the upper levels of the Inmate Housing and Intake and Processing Facility currently under construction and adjacent to the Temporary Housing Center or 'tents.'
Washington and two other inmates were believed to have escaped on Monday. Two of the inmates were captured Monday evening.
The sheriff's office believes that Washington became injured during the escape and got separated from the other two men.
Reginald Batiste was apprehended without incident around 10 a.m. in the 4900 block of Dreaux Street in New Orleans.
Domonique Battle was apprehended without incident around 10:30 a.m. in the 700 block of Majestic Street in Algiers.
Washington, Batiste and Battle were each booked with one count of simple escape.
Batiste was booked April 24 on charges of possession of a firearm and distribution of crack cocaine. He was being held on a $50,000 bond. Washington was booked January 11 on charges of possession of crack cocaine and a municipal attachment. He was being held on a $7,500 bond. Battle was booked on Saturday on a charge of possession of marijuana, second offense. He was being held on a $5,500 bond.
'The Special Operations Division of the Sheriff's Office moved decisively to apprehend these two individuals, working first to capture the inmate with the most serious charges,' said Orleans Parish Sheriff Marlin Gusman. The search has intensified for Washington.
One or more of the inmates injured himself while scaling the armed razor wire fence into the construction site for the new Inmate Housing Facility and Intake and Processing Center, according to the sheriff's office. Officials searched the site, but were unable to find the inmates.
Tents house low to medium level offenders awaiting trial.
Each tent was staffed properly at the time of the incident and the deputy that saw the escape was conducting one of a number of nightly patrols around the exterior of the tent area, OPSO said.
The New Orleans Police Department and other law enforcement officials are assisting the OPSO in the search.
