METAIRIE, La. One of the Saints' final cuts of preseason is back on the roster thanks in part to a spate of injuries on defense.
New Orleans has re-signed versatile defensive player Jay Richardson, coach Sean Payton said. To make room for Richardson, New Orleans waived receiver Andy Tanner.
The Saints saw nose tackle Brodrick Bunkley and defensive end Tyrunn Walker go down with injuries in the season opener against Atlanta. Training camp standout Glenn Foster missed all of practice leading up to the Falcons game and was limited during Wednesday's session.
Additionally, safety Isa Abdul-Quddus has been out with an ankle injury sustained in the final preseason game against Miami.
Richardson can work at both defensive end and outside linebacker, though Payton said for now, he'll fill a need at outside linebacker.
'He played well during camp,' Payton said. 'He was versatile. He's obviously played a lot of positions but he's someone that played a lot of snaps and did a good job in the preseason.'
Payton said in releasing Richardson during final cuts, he told the player that there was a good chance he'd be called back in for a spot on New Orleans' roster.
'He's very smart. He's someone that's a quick study and knows a lot of different positions,' Payton said. '(I) thought he, in training camp, did a lot of good things. That's why, specifically in my discussions with him when training camp ended was there's a good chance this could end up being where we end up signing you back. It happened quicker than expected.'
