NEW ORLEANS Ben Franklin's soccer teams pulled a rare double Thursday night at Tad Gormley stadium as both the boys' and girls' teams won soccer state titles on the same night.
The girls' team continued their incredible run that now extends 40 games over two seasons. The Falcons defeated St. Thomas More 2-0 in the Division II title game.
With less than 2:00 left in the first half, Alex Thomas kicked the ball straight into the net to give her team a 1-0 lead, and the sophomore said that score helped to stop the Cougars momentum.
Franklin added another goal for the win.
In the boys' half of the draw, the 8th-seeded Falcons were not the favorite that their female counterparts had been. Their win was more of a heart stopper.
According to the Advocate New Orleans, Miles McGwire scored in stoppage time to force overtime and Oliver Dejoie scored in the 97th minute to seal the win.
Franklin pulled off the rare boys/girls state title double in 2004 as well.
