METAIRIE, La. - A three-alarm fire ripped through a Metairie apartment complex Friday afternoon, destroying the homes of four young families with children.

The families were home at the time and everyone got out safely, according to fire officials.

The fire occurred in the 4600 block of Yale in Metairie. The fire was put out by 3 pm, but the damage to the apartment complex left the buildings uninhabitable.

Fire officials said all four of the dwellings in the four-plex are uninhabitable.
