BELLE CHASSE, La. -- The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office recovered the body of a man Thursday afternoon near a boat launch in Belle Chasse.

The body of Edward Cortez, 57, was found in the area of the Walker Road Boat Launch near the Hero Canal.

According to the sheriff's office, first responders found no signs of trauma to the body. They're investigating the case as a possible drowning.

Cortez was last seen by a friend who was helping him relocate a truck and boat trailer from the launch to Cortez's home Wednesday.

When Cortez didn't show up at his house, his friends became worried and called the sheriff's office. They found Cortez's unoccupied boat about 1,000 feet away from the launch Wednesday night.

It wasn't until 2:20 p.m. that deputies were able to recover Cortez's body.

An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday to determine the official cause of death.
