KENNER, La. - This Labor Day weekend, you'll find plenty of people enjoying a bright summer day on Lake Pontchartrain at Kenner's Laketown.
'It's just pleasant, lot of families around, you know people walking their dogs and everything,' said Robert Remple, a Jefferson Parish resident.
But the Laketown you see today is very different from the city of Kenner's multi-million dollar vision for its future.
Members of Mayor MikeYenni's administration are moving forward on drafting a Request for Proposals, and it plans to ask for bids from developers to develop Laketown with restaurants, shops, an amphitheater, a water park and condos or a hotel.
'This is a blank canvas. It's really a great opportunity for the city of Kenner,' said Kenner District 3 Councilman Keith Reynaud, who represents the area.
An anchor for the development would be Treasure Chest Casino, which marks its 20th anniversary next week. Kenner officials say the casino has brought the city more than $120 million in revenue over the years.
Yenni said the city has been in talks with a major hotel chain to possibly build in Laketown, and he says the Treasure Chest may consider building a land-based casino, rather than a riverboat, as part of the redevelopment.
Kenner officials say even with more commercial development, they would keep some of the green space and picnic tables families have come to enjoy as they move forward with their vision for the future.
'We did a need assessment study so we could see what was really needed here. In Laketown, I think we have all our bases covered,' said Reynaud.
'Great idea, I'm glad we're using the land around us so we can develop,' said Terrell Roussell, a St. Charles Parish resident who enjoyed Laketown Sunday.
Part of Kenner's vision is already coming to life with new landscaping and lighting on the neutral ground leading into Laketown, but not everyone is happy with the larger picture development.
'It's just going to be one less place you can go to that you can enjoy the greenery, enjoy the water out there and all that,' said Remple.
Kenner officials plan to ask for bids from developers sometime in the next six months. They hope to complete construction by 2018.
