METAIRIE, La. Newly-acquired linebacker Barrett Ruud participated in practice Thursday, opening the door for him to possibly play in the New Orleans Saints' preseason game against the Houston Texans on Saturday.
'We are integrating him into the defense so we could see him maybe later on in the second half,' Saints acting head coach Joe Vitt said.
Ruud is among the players listed as possibilities for this game, including several players who were either injured or have sat out practice recently.
Vitt said cornerback Marquis Johnson, after sitting out two days this week, practiced Thursday and has a good chance of playing.
Defensive end Turk McBride, meanwhile, practiced all week and, if all goes well in evaluations the next couple of days, he could see time against the Texans.
'We will take a look at him and see if there is any post-practice swelling and make an evaluation before the game,' Vitt said. '(He) really had a more productive week than we originally thought in the beginning of the week.'
In all, nine players either didn't practice or went through the session barely.
Receivers Andy Tanner (ankle), Adrian Arrington (knee) and Nick Toon (foot) will not play this week. Vitt said Tanner was progressing while Toon was running. Arrington should be ready for the Redskins game on Sept. 9, Vitt said.
Defensive backs Kamaal McIlwain (groin) and Jabari Greer (sports hernia), defensive tackle Tom Johnson (ankle) and linebackers Curtis Lofton (ankle), David Hawthorne (knee) and Ramon Humber (hamstring) also didn't practice.
