NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans police have charged an 18-year-old woman with vehicular homicide after she allegedly led police on a high-speed chase in Gentilly that ended in a crash that killed one passenger.

The accident happened around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Paris Avenue and Robert E. Lee Boulevard.

Levee District Police Chief Bob Garner said five people were in the SUV when it was stopped at Franklin Avenue and Leon C. Simon Drive for erratic driving.

Brittany Sanders, sped away, hitting a traffic pole and flipping the SUV in Gentilly, Garner said. Four people were hospitalized, and one of them died from their injuries. The identity of the deceased passenger -- a 23-year-old man -- won't be identified until the family is notified.

Police said they believe the driver wasn't under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the crash.

Garner said it does not appear the SUV was reported stolen. Witnesses on the scene said the SUV was going at least 100 miles per hour when it lost control and flipped.

The Orleans Levee District has joined in on the investigation.
