The Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse honored those on the front lines fighting addiction.
Medical reporter Meg Farris emceed as people who work in prevention and treatment were given awards.
A community leadership award was handed out to Major Donna C. Jones and Missy Wilkinson of Gambit got the media award for a science article about addiction as a brain disease, not a choice.
A doctor says CADA is fighting drug abuse that is pervasive in this area.
'We are able to go to schools, private and public, and try to teach children about how the difficulty that they will engage if they start doing drugs. We try and also to bring the message about alcohol abuse, about tobacco use. We know very well if we can get the children not to start smoking until age 19, they never will,' said Dr. Juan Gershanik, a neonatologist and CADA Board President.
