HARAHAN, La. -- Developers unveiled preliminary plans to develop part of the Colonial Country Club in Harahan at a meeting Tuesday night seeking public input.

The developers said the plan calls for an upscale retail center along 10 acres of the Colonial property facing Jefferson Highway.

Businesses would include a bank, a grocery store, feature lots of green space and a buffer between the retail area and the nearby residential neighborhood.

They said the plan could generate more than $1 million in sales taxes for the city of Harahan over 10 years, plus hundreds of jobs.

'Temporary construction jobs, 238 construction jobs that can be sourced locally. Permanent jobs created, 153. Future property tax generated over a 10 years period would be $286,000.

But a number of people in the crowd said the project is being built in an area that is prone to serious flooding and will likely lead to more flooding in their neighborhood.

The developers said they are committed to preventing that and improving drainage.
