JEFFERSON, La. (AP) -- The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says a man collapsed during the race over the Huey P. Long Bridge and died shortly afterward at a hospital.

Col. John Fortunato says the man collapsed a couple minutes into the race, held Sunday as part of a celebration of a $1.2 billion project to widen the bridge for cars.

Fortunato says paramedics on the scene and nurses who were participating in the race ran to help him, and an ambulance quickly got him to a hospital.

Fortunato says he does not know the man's name or where he was from.

The Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office did not immediately return a call Sunday.
