HOUMA, La -- A single vehicle crash into the Westside Boulevard Extension Bridge guardrail killed a man Friday morning as the vehicle landed into the water, authorities said.
The 2010 Land Rover was speeding northbound on LA 311 in Terrebonne Parish when the vehicle failed to negotiate a left curve, police said. The vehicle traveled over 1,000 feet off the roadway's right side before striking the south guardrail, State Police Trooper Evan Harrell said.
The impact made the vehicle airborne and it traveled over the roadway and north guardrail before landing in a drainage canal running parallel to LA 311, police said. Authorities found the body of 41-year-old Rory Lyons of Houma body after the empty Land Rover was pulled out of the Canal.
Lyons was pronounced dead on the scene by the Terrebonne Parish Coroner's Office.
Alcohol use is unknown at this time and routine toxicology tests are pending, police said. It is unknown if Lyons was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, and no other occupants were found after an extensive search, authorities said.
