KENNER, La. - A Spirit Airlines flight out of New Orleans had an emergency and had to return to the airport Thursday, according to Michelle Wilcut, a spokesperson for Armstrong International Airport.
A man who said he was a passenger on Spirit Airlines flight 365 called Eyewitness News and said that during the flight, which was from New Orleans to Dallas, passengers felt vibrations and the cabin had some smoke.
The passenger, who asked not to be identified, said about a minute or two into the flight, passengers heard the wheels retracting on the Airbus 319 aircraft and then heard some grinding noises and felt vibrations.
'Upon indication of a smoky odor in thecabin, our flight 365 from New Orleans to Dallas/Fort Worth returned to New Orleans as a safety precaution,' said Misty Pinson, a spokesperson for Spirit Airlines. It was a normal landing and customers safely deplaned.
Another passenger told Eyewitness News that the airline announced to passengers that the problem appeared to be in part of the air conditioning system.
The flight was scheduled to depart at 2:20 pm and arrive in Dallas about an hour later.
Engineers were working on repairs to the plane and a passenger said they were told that once fixed, they could board the flight, get a refund, or be moved to another flight.
The plane landed safely.
