CHALMETTE, La. - A 70-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a hit and run death of a woman who was walking on the shoulder of the road when she was struck Sunday morning.

The incident occurred at 6 a.m. on LA46 near Madison Street in St. Bernard Parish.

Harold Barrett turned himself in to troopers and was booked with negligent homicide, felony hit and run and reckless operation.

Police said a white pick-up truck went onto the shoulder of the road and hit and killed Donna Landry Sunday while she was walking. Police said the pick-up took off and that Landry was pronounced dead on the scene.

Troopers located the vehicle they believed matched the description of the vehicle in the hit and run and the crime lab was able to positively identify it as the vehicle that struck Landry.

Troopers identified the owner as 70-year-old Harold Barrett of Chalmette. An arrest warrant was issued and Barret turned himself in to troopers at St. Bernard Parish lock-up.
