St. Martin Parish emergency managers are shifting mandatory evacuation orders for some parts of Butte Larose and Happy Town to voluntary status starting Monday morning at 8 a.m.
A parish spokeswoman said officials urge caution as the Atchafalaya River is still rising, just slower than expected. Residents will have to show proof of residency for re-entry and everyone is urged to use caution when driving in areas of standing or high water.
According to a parish news release, the area South from the Happy Town entrance along Atchafalaya River Hwy (La Hwy 3177) up to the intersection of Herman Dupuis Rd and continuing west down Herman Dupuis Rd until the foot of the bridge at Dick Davis Park will be under voluntary evacuation orders starting Monday. Happy Town, Sherburne and Herman Dupuis Rd. from the Dick Davis Bridge until the Pontoon Bridge, will remain under mandatory evacuation.
Additionally, Carter's Cut Canal will be closed to all boat traffic west up to the Pontoon Bridge until further notice.
Some septic systems may be underwater due to the high river, and residents will be unable to use their sewage systems until the
flooding recedes. Those residents who live in the Atchafalaya Acres Subdivision will be under a boil water advisory until further notice.
