ASSUMPTIONPARISH, La. -- ALabadieville man is in the Assumption Parish jail for allegedly breaking into a church Sunday. Authorities were tipped off when the church bells, normallly used for funeral services, began playing Sunday evening, according to the Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office.
The resident priest for St. Philomena Catholic Church on Convent Street called 911 Sunday around 9:30 p.m. The priest, who lives next to the church, reported that the church bells had been activated, according to sheriff's office.
'Officers arrived on scene and made entry into the church and discovered a man who had taken his shoes off and was drinking. He later stated that he was getting ready to play the piano just before deputies arrived. He also indicated that he activated the church bells after making entry,' said a statement from the sheriff's office.
Deputies arrested Hamid Banisaaid, 32. He was booked in the Assumption Parish Detention Center and charged with simple burglary of a religious building, according to the sheriff's office.
