NEWORLEANS- The Gretna ferry will be discontinued on June 30, while the Algiers - Canal Street ferry's hours will be cut down, the Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.

The Algiers - Chalmette ferry service will remain as it is now and the DOTDsaid it will be treated as a state route because drivers in that area don't have nearby alternatives to cross the river.

Beginning on July 1, the DOTDwill utilize available funding to continue the operations.

The Algiers/Canal ferry's hours will now run from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday through Friday and for eight hours each weekend day.

ADOTDspokesperson said the schedule could be adjusted based on funding and ridership levels.
