NEW ORLEANS - A woman was injured as she fell two stories from an apartment balcony as firefighters battled a two-alarm fire in Algiers Friday night.
The fire occurred just before 6 p.m. in the 6100 block of Tullis Drive at the Cypress Run apartments.
According to the New Orleans Fire Department, firefighters arriving on the scene found two adults and two children trapped on a third-floor balcony. A ladder was put up to the building and as one of the adults attempted to lower the other, the woman was unable to hang on and she fell to the ground. She was transported to the hospital. There was no immediate word on her injuries.
Fire officials believe the blaze started on the first floor of the complex. Officials said the resident smelled something burning and opened the utility door where she was drying some clothes. The woman quickly closed the door and called for help. Fire officials credited her quick action with preventing the fire from spreading.
Eighteen units responded to the fire.
