NEW ORLEANS -- The captain of a tugboat is dead after an accident on the Inner Harbor Nagivation Canal (IHNC), or Inudstrial Canal, early Thursday morning.

According to Coast Guard - New Orleans, around midnight, the tug boat Cory Michael was pushing a crane in the Inner Harbor Navigational Canal, when it requested the Florida Avenue Bridge be raised for passage.

The bridge was raised above the height requested but the crane arm struck the bridge structure and reportedly fell back, striking the wheelhouse, or pilot house of the tug boat.

Harbor Police, Coast Guard New Orleans, EMS and the New Orleans Fire Deparmtent responded to the scene.

Just before 1 a.m., EMS listed the captain of the tug boat, 46-year-old Michael Collins, deceased as a result of the crane falling on the wheelhouse.

At 1:25 a.m., crews were attempting to remove the crane from the bridge structure.

River traffic was haulted temporarily but has since reopened.
