METAIRIE, La. -- The New Orleans Saints signed Ryan Griffin to the practice squad on Wednesday after he cleared waivers, according to a league source. It's unclear which of the 10 practice squad members will be released in order to make room.
The move comes just one day after the team released the former Tulane quarterback in order to resign kicker Shayne Graham, whom the Saints released Saturday.
Griffin would have likely been scooped up by one of several teams in the market for a quarterback had been released Saturday. However, Payton denied that team waited three days to release Griffin in order to help prevent one of those teams from signing him.
'You don't go in thinking, 'Hey, strategically we are going to try and release (Griffin) at a certain time or waive him at a certain time,' Payton said. 'It's really about getting these guys ready to practice with the schedule we have, and so some of it pertains to that.'
