AVONDALE, La. -- This Memorial Day weekend, locals gathered for solemn ceremonies to remember local soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service of their country.
At Restlawn Park Cemetery in Avondale, veterans and their families dedicated a new Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
The memorial holds the names of the 882 United States soldiers from Louisiana who died fighting in Vietnam, and the 38 soldiers missing in action.
'They gave their ultimate sacrifice. They gave the life to have freedom for us and the people coming up in the future. All Americans should pay tribute to these fellas, fallen heroes. They're my heroes too. They're my brothers. I lost a lot of people in Vietnam, but today we remember them,' said Leroy Schouest, a retired member of the U.S. Army. 'It's a good thing.'
To close the ceremony, local veterans groups placed memorial wreaths at the garden of honor.
