NEW ORLEANS Louisiana native Ariel Mitchell is ready for a job that only a handful of women have held as a Harlem Globetrotter.On Friday she returned home to Dillard University for a few minutes in the spotlight at her alma mater.
The 5'7' basketball player, who'll be known as 'Mighty' Mitchell with the Globetrotters, graduated from Dillard University earlier this year.She was announced as one of the famous basketball troupe last week.
'It's been a blast so far,' she said at a press conference at Dillard Friday.
Originally from St. James, La., Mitchell is one of only 11 women to ever to play for the Globetrotters team, and the first to come out of a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) school.She is one of two women joining the Globetrotters this year.
'Being one of only 11 women... I'm following in a great tradition,' she said.'I'm really honored and excited.'
Mitchell is the third Globetrotter with a Dillard connection.The late Billy Ray Hobley performed with the team for many years.There is a current Globetrotter from New Orleans: Big Easy Lofton.
Mitchell, a 5'7' shooting guard, led the Dillard Lady Bleu Devils basketball team for four years, scoring over 1,000 points and earning All-Conference honors in her sophomore, junior, and senior years.She averaged 13.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per game and graduated with a degree in public health.
