NEW ORLEANS -- New Orleans police removed the body of a man Sunday from the Mississippi River near the Governor Nicholls Street Wharf.

Port officials received a call at about 3:50 p.m. of a body in the river near the Erato Street terminal.

Police were able to remove the body from the water by 4:30 p.m.

The body was discovered in a busy stretch along the river. Witnesses on the scene said they were able to see the body from their hotel rooms.

Police have not identified the body.

The official cause of death won't be released until an autopsy is conducted.
