COVINGTON, La. -- The Covington Police Department has arrested a Covington man for allegedly raping a woman he met online.
According to police, on July 12, a woman, whose name is being withheld to protect her identity, reported that she was raped by Ricky Bernard Bates in the 800 block of W 9th Ave, in Covington.
The victim reported meeting Bates through an online dating site and communicating with him via text messages.
The victim said that she agreed to meet Bates, who picked her up and brought her to his residence, and while at Bates' residence, he attempted to have intercourse with her.
The victim told Bates she did not consent to having intercourse and he reportedly held her down and raped her.
The woman reported that she attempted to fight Bates off of her but he choked her to the point of losing consciousness.
Bates then reportedly forced the victim to shower and destroy evidence of the crime.
She was eventually able to escape the residence and was picked up by a friend.
The victim reported the incident to the Covington Police Department, and Detectives were able to secure an arrest warrant for Bates on a charge of forcible rape.
Bates turned himself in to police Thursday, at which time he was booked and transported to the St. Tammany Parish Jail.
