METAIRIE, La. ― When Saints running back Reggie Bush broke his right fibula in New Orleans' Week 2 win over San Francisco, the original timeline was 4-6 weeks.

Barring any setbacks, the fifth-year pro will hit that number exactly, returning for either the Week 7 game against Cleveland or Week 8 versus Pittsburgh.

But he's not going to push it and get back too soon.

'You know, I think so,' Bush said Wednesday in front of his locker. 'But at the same time, you may feel good, but you still may not be ready. And the last thing I want to do is have a setback. Even though I may feel like I can go out there and push it, still you have to take hits on it.

'And I think that's when the test really comes, when you know you can take a shot on that injury.'

Bush said X-rays have showed the crack isn't fully healed. That hasn't kept him from running on a treadmill, in a pool or conditioning by bike, he said.

His next step is to start some 'directional' running to see how it handles cutting left and right off of it.

'It's a matter of rehab, and we'll do probably another X-ray next week some time,' Bush said. 'And that will kind of be, I think the deciding factor if I'm going to play the next week or if it will be the following week.'
