MARRERO, La. - Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand says the 19-year-old Algiers woman murdered in a drive-by shooting Saturday night in Marrero may have been killed by bullets meant for her boyfriend.
A roadside memorial marks the spot along the Westbank Expressway where Miquisha Nash lost her life.
According to investigators, Nash was a passenger in a black 2005 Monte Carlo when a van pulled up and occupants started firing at the car with AK-47 assault rifles.
She was hit in the side and back.
Ronnie Videau, 25, was driving the car that was fired on.
'She was with someone who is well known to the sheriff's office and a family that's notorious for crime on the Westbank, Ronnie Videau,' said Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand.
Sheriff Normand says deputies arrested Videau for various outstanding warrants.
He had prior arrests for drugs, battery on a police officer, burglary and assault.
Videau is not charged in the shooting.
'He indicated that it may be retaliatory,' said Normand. 'He didn't tell us exactly for what, rambled a little bit about a bunch of different prior incidents that had occurred.'
Susie Tinson lives on Robinson Avenue in Marrero where Videau pulled off the lower expressway after the shooting and called 911.
'I heard the shots,' she said. 'It's dangerous. You can't even ride the streets, ride in the streets no more because you don't know what's going to happen.'
Sheriff Normand says Nash had only been dating Videau for about 10 days and it's possibly she did not know the full extent of his criminal background.
'There is a line of Videaus, we have I think over 20, he would be the third generation Videau that we're having trouble with,' said Normand. 'This is the classic example of the wrong place at the wrong time.'
The sheriff says the shooting may be related to others on the Westbank, last week.
Anyone with information about this shooting is urged to call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or the JPSO Homicide Division at 504-364-5300.
