BELLECHASSE, La. - Authorities are investigating the drowning death of a 21-year-old man at a pool party in Belle Chasse Saturday, the second drowning in Plaquemines Parish this week.
At approximately 1:15 a.m., the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office received a 911 call of a man who had been found unresponsive in a swimming pool at a residence in the 200 block of Burmaster Street in Belle Chasse.
Someone on the scene had administered CPR, but Shawn Meladine, 21, died after being transported to the hospital.
According to Plaquemines deputies, Meladine was one of about 20 people at a pool party Friday night. Just after midnight, several people went swimming and said they did not notice anyone else in the pool when they got out. Later, a friend noticed Meladine's lifeless body in the water.
He had no signs of trauma, deputies said, but an autopsy was performed by the Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office to determine the official cause and manner of death. The results of the autopsy are pending toxicology tests.
Meladine's death appears to be Plaquemines Parish's second accidental drowning death in the past three days.
On Thursday, the body of Edward Cortez, 57, also of Belle Chasse, was recovered from the Hero Canal by the Sheriff's Office Marine Division. Cortez went missing on the evening of July 2 after a day of boating.
Results of Cortez's autopsy, which was conducted this morning, are also pending toxicology testing, deputies said.
