NEW ORLEANS -- The home invasion last week was one of several recent crimes near the Uptown campus, and Tulane police say they're ramping up efforts to keep students safe.

The department has added four new officers and two security officers.

Officials say they're launching increased bicycle patrols, wearing high visibility vests and extending the department's jurisdiction to areas just outside campus, where recent crimes have been reported.

'The concerning thing for us is, it's occurring in an area that is populated by a significant number of our students,' said Tulane University Police Department Superintendent John Barnwell. 'It's all in the periphery of campus, but we've got a commitment, the university does, to help ensure the safety of our students, both on and off campus.'

Officials say they've also established primary pedestrian corridors off-campus -- areas students are encouraged to use when walking across campus.
