COVINGTON, La. - A Covington police captain - already under investigation for the controversial football referee arrests - is now on paid administrative leave after accidentally discharging a weapon inside the police station earlier this week.

Capt. Jack West accidentally discharged the shotgun on Wednesday, while demonstrating it to a new recruit.Police Chief Tim Lentz said West claimed he didn't know the gun was loaded.

The shot left a hole in the ceiling.Chief Lentz says the incident is under investigation and West was placed on leave, in light of the other investigation he is the focus of.

West is being investigated for his role in the arrests of two high school football referees in October, when West was serving as interim Covington Police chief.An investigation is underway into the arrests and handling of the case.
