AMITE, La. A 52-year-old man was sentenced to 10 years for vehicular homicide after a crash he caused killed a Kentwood resident in November 2012.

Robert Morris, of Kentwood, pleaded no contest in January to the charge.

According to the district attorney's office, Morris was arrested on Nov. 10, 2012 after a crash along Louisiana Hwy. 38.

The police report stated that Morris was traveling east when he ran off the road. While attempting to get back on the road, his car spun into the westbound lane.

Forty-seven feet later, he collided with the car Elmus H. Welch was driving, the report said. Welch was transported to a local hospital where he later died.

Officers determined that Morris had been driving under the influence.

Morris must serve at least five years before having a chance for parole.
