METAIRIE, La. Saints cornerback Jabari Greer is in Philadelphia where he's set to have sports hernia surgery after sustaining a groin injury two days ago.
Acting head coach Joe Vitt said Greer flew to Philadelphia on Wednesday to see Dr. William Meyers, who has performed the same surgery on several other Saints players, including Will Smith, Jonathan Vilma and Devery Henderson.
'Our training staff does a great job with,' Vitt said of catching sports hernias. 'We've had great success with Dr. Meyers in Philadelphia. We've had a number of our players go through the procedure and come back really full speed and come back quicker if it was a non-surgical procedure.'
Greer is expected to be ready for the Sept. 9 regular season opener against the Washington Redskins.
Meanwhile, rookie receiver Nick Toon left practice early with a foot injury, the latest injury to hit the team in the first seven practices.
Cornerback Patrick Robinson has missed the past three practices with a shoulder injury and receiver Chris Givens sat out Thursday with an undisclosed malady.
Vitt didn't elaborate on Toon's injury, saying only that he would be evaluated after practice. Toon appeared to come down uneasily and limped into the training room with medical staff.
Defensive tackle Swanson Miller returned after missing the past two days with a left lower leg injury.
