RIVERRIDGE, La. - has moved the pride of River Ridge, the John Curtis Patriots to the top of their national rankings after the previous top team, Grayson High of Georgia, lost this past weekend.

Curtis, a perennial top team in Louisiana, made its mark nationally when it defeated Plant City out of Florida by a 33-3 score two weeks ago. The Pats topped ESJ this past weekend.

Curtis' biggest foe in possibly winning a national title will be its remaining strength of schedule, or lack thereof. Since being banished years ago to the 2A division, Curtis has had to front load its schedule with tough opponents to get its team ready for the postseason.

This year will be no different as Curtis should waltz through its final six regular season games, and possibly its first two or three playoff games before rivals like Evangel or Calvary Baptist await.

In 2006, Curtis also raised eyebrows when it blasted highly-rated Hoover, Alabama. They finished the season ranked #2. That year Curtis was ranked second in the USAToday poll before the top team lost in its state championship. Curtis was leapfrogged by Carroll High in Texas. USAToday cited 'strength of schedule' in awarding Carroll the title.
