GENTILLY, La. -- In Gentilly Wednesday morning, Mary Barre was startled by heavy rain and worse, strong winds that damaged a neighbor's home.

Lightning knocked power out for hours.

'It was a wind, a big wind. We didn't know what was going on 'til we looked out and saw the trees,' Barre said. 'In the house down the block, he heard the wires popping. Whenever we hear wires popping, we get up, because it sounds like a gun.'

The severe weather stretched across the metro area.

Eyewitness Bobby Juge sent in video of wind whipping through the Eden Isles subdivision in Slidell.

Earlier on, heavy downpours rolled through.

Wednesday afternoon, Entergy trucks fanned out across Gentilly and the Bywater neighborhood, where thousands dealt with scattered outages.
