NEW ORLEANS A man accused of killing his two-year-old son by slashing his throat in 2009 has pleaded guilty in court and will receive a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of probation, parole or suspension.
Danny Platt entered the plea Thursday at a pre-trial conference. The state agreed not to seek the death penalty.
In 2009, JaShawn Powell's body was found after Platt allegedly confessed to police.
Powell's mother, Daniella Powell, read a statement at Thursday's hearing.
At the time of the arrest in 2009, then-NOPD Supt. Warren Riley said Platt committed the crime after being ordered to pay child support. Riley said that Platt had visitation rights for the boy and had picked him up prior to the killing.
