FRANKLINTON, La. -- Washington Parish will go back to voters in six months in another attempt to stay afloat.

The council voted Monday night to seek a 1/3 of 1-cent sales tax increase in October, since the last attempt, last month, failed.

However, this time, the tax will only be for 10 years, instead of 20.

Parish leaders say they need the extra money the tax will generate to meet state mandated payments to other parish agencies.

The parish has had to lay off workers and deal with a lawsuit from the sheriff because of its failing financial status.
