NEWORLEANS - The old Schwegmann's building on Broad Street has been falling apart since Hurricane Katrina.

While many have heard the Whole Foods rumors, it is not as well known that the store is just one part of a 60,000 square foot development coming to the area.

The Refresh Project began Thursday morning with construction crews already at work before the official ground breaking ceremony that took place at 9:15 a.m.

In addition to Whole Foods, there's will also be Liberty's Kitchen, which is going to provide a culinary and life training skills program for at risk youth.

Additionally, the new complex will have a first-of-its-kind teaching kitchen and a community space for health and fitness programs.

Project officials said the goal is to provide fresh foods to under-served communities along Broad Street and bring economic development to the area.

They are hoping it is just the beginning of a brand new neighborhood.

Officials' goal is to open the project at the beginning of 2014.
