MT. HERMON, La. - A man shouting about Obamacare and threatening his girlfriend while firing shots inside of his home was wounded by a sniper after a standoff with deputies Sunday morning, according to Mike Haley, a spokesman for the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office.
The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. in the 37000 block of Highway 438 in Mt. Hermon.
According to Haley, deputies were called to the home in response to shots being fired and a woman being in danger.
Haley said that when officer arrived on the scene, the man's girlfriend had already fled to safety and the suspect, identified as 56-year-old Johnnie A. Ryals was inside armed with at least seven weapons including six long guns and one semi-automatic pistol.
Haley said Ryan was belligerent and was yelling that Obamacare had deprived him of insurance benefits and that he could not get his medicine.
Ryals pointed a rifle at deputies on several occasions and shouted obscenities, according to Haley. At one point he raised his weapon in the direction of deputies again and a sniper shot him one time, striking him in the ear.
Haley said Ryals tried again to point a gun at the officers, but was subdued and brought to the hospital. He said Ryals' girlfriend was safe.
Ryals was being taken care of at the hospital. The full extent of his condition is not known.
Washington Parish Sheriff Randy Seal, who was at the scene, stated, 'This is yet another example of the extreme danger our officers face daily. What started out as a peaceful Sunday morning ended with gunfire, all because of the reckless behavior of one individual who displayed a total disregard for the safety and welfare of others. Our officers responded promptly and did an excellent job.'
