NOPD -- Police are investigating a fatal shooting that left a 25-year-old man dead late Friday night.

Around 9:45 p.m. Friday, police responded to a call of a shooting in the parking lot of a business in the 3400 block of South Claiborne Ave. Officers arrived to find a 25-year-old man shot in his vehicle.

According to police, a man was in the parking lot when he observed an acquaintance of his drive-up and stop. The 25-year-old man exited the car and pointed a shotgun at the man standing in the parking lot, at which time he pulled out his handgun and shot the 25-year-old man.

After being shot, the 25-year-old man entered his car and drove a short distance striking the cement portion of the neutral ground, officers say. The car stopped there and the man died on the scene.

Detectives recovered a shotgun from the car and a handgun from the man in the parking lot. They are still in the process of determining the origin of the weapons.

Investigators say that the man in the parking lot, who was also 25-years-old, was interviewed and released.

This investigation is on-going. The identity of the man shot to death is being withheld pending notification of family members.

Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to call CRIMESTOPPERS at 822-1111 or contact NOPD. The lead homicide detective in this case is Elizabeth Garcia.
