GRETNA, La. -- The Jefferson Parish coroner says a pregnant woman who was killed over the weekend in unincorporated Gretna died from strangulation.
Katherine Martinez, 23, was stabbed as well, but the coroner ruled that the official cause of death was strangulation. Though the unborn child was not stabbed in the attack, the child did not survive.
Deputies say Martinez's body, which had been stabbed three times, wasn't discovered for several hours after she had been killed in the 600 block of Whitney Avenue in Gretna.
She was scheduled to pick up her mother from the airport at 11 p.m., but when she didn't showed up, her mother got a ride to her home and discovered her body on the kitchen floor.
There were no signs of forced entry, leading deputies to believe Martinez may have known the killer.
There are no suspects or a motive at this time. Anyone with information is urged to contact Homicide Detective Gabe Faucetta at 504-364-5300 or call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
