NEW ORLEANS The pungent smell in the air can likely be attributed to the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, according to the State's Health Director Jimmy Guidry.

'It certainly seems that it was coming from that area,' he said on Friday's Eyewitness Morning News. 'Odor from that much petroleum would be anticipated.'

Guidry said that the smell would most likely act as an irritant, affecting some with lung conditions and asthma, but not being felt at all by many.

Guidry said the EPA is monitoring the air and hasn't detected any chemicals as of Friday morning, especially any that would have long-term effects.

He said the odor would likely arrive before anything would be detected in the air from samples.
