OAKDALE, La. (AP) -- The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says a former Oakdale snake farm owner has been sentenced to jail for cruelty to animals, and a Florida snake farm is getting his snakes.

Enforcement Division spokesman Adam Einck said Monday that David Beauchemin got a two-year sentence, with one year suspended and credit for five months served since his arrest in May.

Judge Joel Davis ordered Beauchemin to pay a $1,000 fine within 60 days of release, or go back to jail for the second year.

Beauchemin was arrested in Texas. Einck says Beauchemin's wife, Tawni Beauchemin, is still wanted.

Einck says snakes confiscated from High End Herps in Oakdale now belong to Glades Herp Farm of Bushnell, Fla., which has been taking care of them.
