NEW ORLEANS -- A potential delay in the corruption trial of former Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard and former Parish Attorney Tom Wilkinson arose as both defendants are seeking a continuance.

A motion filed on behalf of both defendants seeks to continue the trial date from Oct. 1 to Jan. 7, 2013.

It argues that Wilkinson's attorney Ralph Whalen experienced 5 to 6 feet of water in his Mandeville home during Hurricane Issac, and and that the cleanup and repair of Whalen's home and disruption to his life 'will make adequate (trial) preparation impossible.'

The motion also states that prosecutors have agreed not to oppose the request.

Broussard and Wilkinson have both pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from alleged payroll fraud and kickback schemes.

U.S. District Judge Hayden Head Jr. has yet to rule on the continuance.
