BATONROUGE, La. - What would you buy if you won the record-breaking $500 million Powerball jackpot on Wednesday?
You could buy 8 of the world's most expensive private jets, the Gulfstream G-550. It would set you back $59.9 million a plane.
Or, if you prefer a house, you could get a 92,000 square foot mansion in Monaco, where the world's most expensive real estate is nearly $5,500 a square foot.
So, is there anything you can do to up your odds of winning?
'The odds of winning everything is one in 175 million,' said Tulane statistics Assistant Professor Michelle Lacey.
'A lot of people will think that if they buy more tickets, they have a better chance of winning. But if you buy 1,000 tickets, or 5,000 tickets you're still not even going to have a one percent chance of winning,' she said.
Buying two or three tickets increases your chance about as much as cracking open a fortune cookie. It doesn't increase them much at all. But in the past, two people actually have won the Powerball jackpot based on their fortune cookie numbers.
'I always tell people that whenever I play, I always play with the numbers 123456. And they say why would you possibly want to do that? That number will never come up? And I say, it's just as likely to come up as any other number that you can think of,' Lacey said.
Interestingly, the winner of the Powerball is a public record in Louisiana. So, there really is no way to keep your winnings a secret.
