BATON ROUGE A woman who escaped from a Louisiana prison in the beginning of 2013 has been caught in the Los Angeles area, according to state corrections officials.
Keana Barnes, who is from the New Orleans area, escaped from the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women in St. Gabriel around 1 a.m. on Jan 1. She had been in custody since May 2004, when she began serving a 25-year sentence for manslaughter.
'(A) LAPD officer was giving Barnes a ticket on Monday for loitering when she apparently gave police a fake name,' said a statement from Pam Laborde, a spokesperson from the Department of Public Safety and Corrections. 'Suspicious, officers took her into custody and transported her to the police department. On the way, Barnes confessed her true identity and advised the officers that she was an escapee from Louisiana. Officers confirmed her identity through fingerprints.'
Barnes is expected to appear in a California court on Wednesday.
