SLIDELL, La. -- Police are investigating a crash in the Dellwood subdivision Sunday that left one man dead and one man in critical condition, according to Det. Daniel Seuzeneau, a spokesman for Slidell Police.

Around 9:30 p.m., authorities were called to the intersection of Riveria and Nassau drives, where a Dodge Durango was overturned with a utility pole leaning on the truck, Seuzeneau said.

Police believe that the driver of the truck, Joshua Jones, 29, of Harahan, was driving over 60 mph on Riveria, a quiet street in the subdivision when the speed limit is 20 mph, and ignored a stop sign at Nassau, before plowing into a Chevrolet Malibu with two people inside, driver Sandra Cosse, 53, and the passenger Ryan Cosse, 21, Seuzeneau said.

The impact with the Malibu caused the Dodge Durango to overturn and strike a utility pole, trapping Jones and the passenger, Brandon Tarto, 26, of Chalmette, Seuzeneau said. Jones was killed instantly in the crash and Tarto is in critical condition at a New Orleans hospital after rescue crews with St. Tammany Fire District One, Slidell Police Department, Cleco and Acadian Ambulance worked for over two hours to free Tarto from the truck.

The Cosses were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.

Jones was listed to be at fault in the crash, Seuzeneau said, and impairment is suspected to be a contributing factor, but toxicology results are pending.

'The crash scene was surreal. It's something you would never expect to see in a residential neighborhood,' said Detective Daniel Seuzeneau, spokesman for the Slidell Police Department. 'The firemen, with St. Tammany Fire District One, deserve a lot of credit for potentially saving the passenger's life. They worked tirelessly for over two hours trying to free the passenger. The angle of the Dodge Durango and the position of the utility pole made it one of the most challenging extractions that I have ever witnessed,' said Seuzeneau.
